"Double Trouble" is my favorite nickname for this tractor because of its two engines and two transmissions. The restoration process of the 1950 John Deere model R took over 500 labor hours. It began by locating and purchasing from a local tractor enthusiast who had recently acquired the tractor from a long-time farmer who purchased it new in 1950 in Waco, Texas.
Upon receiving the R, I assessed the tractor's overall condition, started to make a detailed list of needed repairs, and obtained a service manual to assist with the teardown and inspection of the major components of the tractor. As you follow along with my detailed restoration book, I will explain the process of rebuilding both engines, transmissions, final drive, steering and the full electric systems, in addition to the paint and bodywork. This was quite an undertaking. I have gained so much knowledge and confidence in my abilities and look forward to competing at the 2021 Delo Tractor Restoration Competition.
